Materialize Shanghai Study Abroad Program
It was a new educational partnership model between Neuni in Shanghai and Art CenterCollege of Design, LA. Neuni brings in radical materials innovation, cutting edge digital fabrication and a network of manufacturers. ArtCenter brings industry excellence and California’s culture of innovation and change- making.
Timeline - 3 months
I was among the 12 really fortunate students to be a part of this amazing study abroad experience where we got a chance to travel across China to various different factories and learn about the manufacturing process and material innovation.
We also had a really amazing time working in the Neuni material design studio. During that time we had a great opportunity to attend lectures / talks of accomplished industrialists and designers from all over China.
2- Week Research Trip

In this 2- week materials research trip we went to 30+ manufacturers, design studios, artisans & brands across China, we discovered a range of making processes from traditional craft to mass manufacturing to advanced fabrication.
Field Research Objectives​
​
Identify opportunities for materials innovation with Neuni ‘s network of manufacturers, digital fabrication and design studios.
Seek key opportunities for design to make an impact and create value - thru new markets, sustainable solutions, hybrid processes, etc.
Understand unique ecological, cultural, social and historical contexts
Consider all stakeholders , from maker to end user.
Over the Research trip in China we learnt about various fabrication processes like about injection molding, casting, 3D knitting etc.
